Turkey: Conscientious objector İnan Süver
Call to write solidarity and protest letters

War Resisters’ International (WRI) has been informed that Turkish conscientious objector İnan Süver was in hunger strike beginning of September 2010. He ended his hunger strike for health reasons. It is not known to WRI what prompted the hunger strike, and what are the demands. İnan Süver was detained in Istanbul on 5 August 2010, and has been transferred to the military prison in Izmir on 23 August, where he is presently being held in pre-trial detention.

War Resisters’ International has been informed today that Turkish conscientious objector İnan Süver has been arrested today while trying to get an ID paper from the office of his municipality. During the check of his identity and came out that his address was listed as the address of a "deserter", and police was called to arrest him. He was first brought to the police station, and later this morning to Bakirkoy court, where his detention was ordered. He has been sent to Kasimpasa military prison, and it is expected that he will be transferred to Izmir soon.

British refusenik Joe Glenton released from prison
„Bring the troops back from Afghanistan”

British soldier Joe Glenton, who was released from prison some days ago, spoke at a packed anti-war meeting in London yesterday. It was his first public appearance after his imprisonment. He demanded to bring back the troops from Afghanistan and added: „I consider it a badge of honor to have resisted and to continue to resist. I’ve learnt that the real enemy is not the man in front of you you’re pointing your rifle at, but the men directly behind you and above you telling you to pull the trigger.“ Joe Glenton was released on July 12th after serving a prison term for refusing to return to Afghanistan.

War Resisters’ International has been informed today by its Israeli affiliate New Profile about the repeated imprisonment of conscientious objector Shir Regev. Shir Regev, 20, from the village of Tuval in the North of Israel, an anarchist and anti-Occupation activist, has began serving his third prison term (34 days) on 14 July 2010.

Nagorno Karabakh: Conscientious objector Armen Mirzoyan sentenced to one year imprisonment

On 30 June 2010, conscientious objector Armen Mirzoyan was sentenced to one year imprisonment for "refusal to perform military duties", Forum 18 News reported on 1 July. He was sentenced at Hadrut District Court in the south of Nagorno-Karabakh, an internationally unrecognised entity in the south Caucasus.
